Police in Guanajuato have denied using live bullets to disperse brawling fans in the aftermath of the Ascenso MX clash between Celaya and San Luis on Saturday afternoon.
Fights between the two sets of supporters took place outside the stadium after the full-time whistle. Initial reports said the authorities had been firing their guns to deter the altercation, but today’s statement denies those claims.
“Police personnel who participated in the operation to stop the altercation did not carry weapons, and at no time was the safety of people who were indirectly involved in this event put at risk.”
Instead, the police blamed firecrackers for the confusion:
“Participants in the fight set off firecrackers which were confused with gun detonations by onlookers. The situation was controlled without major incidents being registered.” (Milenio)
Celaya lost the game 4-0. The result leaves them in 14th place with just two points from five games. The win moved San Luis up to second, one point behind leaders Atlante.
